Dec 6th - Cauliflower Report, South opens 2003 campaign.
Nov 11th - 1967-68 Patriot Results. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the first Parkersburg South Patriots wrestling team. The team was co-coached by Rod "D.I." Oldham and Dwain "Whispering" Wilcox. South opened the season with consecutive home wins against Williamstown (Dec. 18th) and Waterford (Dec 30th) before suffering their first loss at home on January 6th against Marietta. South wrestled 12 dual matches and the only tournament action was in the Region 2 Championship against 8 other teams (all classes, AAA, AA and A). South compiled a winning record that first year finishing 7-5 and a 3rd place finish at regionals. Only regional champions advanced to the states and three patriot grapplers fell just short of that goal by finishing as regional runner-ups. There were no consolation matches that year. Individually, South was lead by 120 pounder Phil Clevenger (11-3-1, 7 pins, 51 team points, regional runner-up), 112 pounder Harold Haynes (10-3, 7 decisions, regional semis), 180 pounder John Nessleroad (9-3, 7 pins, 43 team points), 95 pounder Jim Wingrove (9-2, 5 decisions, 37 team points, regional runner-up) and 133 pounder Jerry Johnson (5-4, regional runner-up)

SOUTHSIDE WRESTLING HISTORY

The first wrestling teams in South Parkersburg were established in February, 1962 when both, Edison and Franklin Jr. Highs became charter members of the Wood County Jr. High Wrestling League. Edison finished second in the inaugural county tournament and Franklin finished fourth out of the six team field. Edison's founding Coach Bob Beto claimed the Southside's first ever championship when he led Edison to it's first County Championship in 1966, ending Jackson's string of four victories.

A few years after Edison and Franklin's wrestling teams were established, Jack Leach and Gordon Monroe started Southside's first Small Fry program with the South Parkersburg Rec Team in 1965. South Parkersburg joined the Wood County Rec Program in it's second year. One year later, Jack Leach again established a Southside program when he founded the Lubeck Rec Team. Mineral Wells would join the Recreation Program in 1976-77.

Franklin alumnus, Robert Vensel, becomes the first Southside wrestler to have wrestled in Jr. High, and win a State High School Championship. Robert lost a first round match in the 1st Annual Wood County Jr. High Tournament in 1962 before winning the 145 pound class at the State High School Championship in 1965 for Parkersburg High School.

Franklin Jr. High would win it's first title in 1970 being led by their second ever coach, Fred Halbert. Franklin's first coach was Rod Oldham, who left the Jr. High circuit after the 1967 season to become newly formed Parkersburg South High School's coach when he was appointed the job as Co-Coach with Dwain Wilcox. Coach Oldham would take on full coaching duties the two years later and led South to it's first state title in 1975.

During the 73-74 season and the 74-75 season, South would support it's first freshmen team due to the over-crowding in the Jr. Highs. Franklin ninth graders attended South for two years while Blennerhassett Jr. High was being built. The Freshmen Team would compete in the Wood County Jr. High League and won the regular season title which they shared with two other teams with with a 5-1 record. The Freshmen Team finished second in the 1974 County Tournament. In 1975, two freshmen, Danny Underwood and Gig Dornick, wrestled varsity and won regional titles as ninth graders. Upon the completion of Blennerhassett Jr. High, the ninth graders returned to Franklin Jr. High.

On March 29, 1976, Parkersburg South High School hosted the first foreign exchange wrestling match in the state of West Virginia when local wrestlers paired up against a team from Poland. The Wood County AAU Wrestling Club was formed some time later to prepare local wrestlers in international wrestling competition.

Blennerhassett joined the Wood County Jr. High League during it's first year in the 1975-76 season and finished third in the County Tournament. In their second year, they claimed the school's first sport title, winning the County Tournament and setting a new scoring record in the 1977 tournament.

Franklin Jr. High would close it's doors after the 1992 season due to declining enrollment in Wood County, but in that final season, Franklin's Chad Smith and Jeremy Crites claimed the school's last two individual titles with Smith being crowned Outstanding Wrestler.

In 1993, Steve Bosley and other concerned parents established the Patriot Wrestling Club. The Patriots Club is not associated with any league and runs independently. The Patriots Club allows the more serious wrestler to practice more often and compete on a national level. The club is opened to all ages and it's primary mission is to prepare wrestlers for competition at Parkersburg South High School.
