HISTORY
Jr. High Wrestling was first introduced in Wood County by varsity wrestlers from Parkersburg High School (PHS) in the late 1950s. PHS Coach Bob Dutton would send his wrestlers to visit the Jr. Highs to teach wrestling during their gym time. In 1961, Coach Buddy James took a squad from Jackson Jr. High to scrimmage two other teams, believed to have been Hamilton and VanDevender. After the 1961 scrimmages, the Wood County Board gave their consent to officially include wrestling as a sanctioned sport in the Jr. Highs and the first official tournament was held in March 1962. This displeased some of the coaches as they were required to coach all the sports within their school. The sport seasons ran consectively and this did not give the coaches a break as the wrestling season was squeezed in between basketball and track and the county tournament was held in late March or early April.
